I have a 6-week old American Water Spaniel puppy. I bought her a crate to confine her for short periods of time when I would be unable to supervise her (in the shower, grocery shopping, etc.). She’s already catching on to the idea of house training and whines whenever she needs to go outside, without any crate training whatsoever. I’m on the fence right now whether crate training is even necessary.
I’m a graduate student and will have to be at my lab all day tomorrow, so I won’t be home from 8:30 until 5:00. Mondays are the only days where I will be absent for that long. It feels kind of inhumane to put a dog in a crate for 9 hours, but the heat index is in the triple digits so the backyard isn’t an option currently. She’s still very small, so the crate is pretty big relative to her, I haven’t put the divider up yet. Would it be better to just leave her in a bathroom with lights on or to just leave her in her crate?
