I am getting 2 basset hound puppies, and am wondering what size cage to get for them. I would like to be able to use the cage for the life of the dogs. I am thinking of getting a 48" x 28” x 35" and getting a divider for it when they are small. I would like to crate train them to housebreak them. Will this be too big for them when they are adults? Would a 42" x 26" x 32" be big enough for 2 adult bassets?

if you have a divider to size the crate appropriately to the size of the dog…

I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on building a rabbit hutch for two males (so yes, same hutch, but seperate living quarters).
I am really not wanting to put a hardware cloth floor in, as I’ve heard these can be detrimental to the rabbits feet, and also because I feed lots of hay to these guys, so the hay would end up getting caught in the mesh something terrible. Since we’ve gotten these rabbits, I’ve kept them in a dog crate with a divider, so I am used to keeping these guys on bedding.
Anyway, so I thought maybe for a solid floored hutch made out of wood I could use linoleum and roll it up the sides a bit? Would this be easy to do? Inexpensive? Do you think I could find old linoleum or should a little bit of new linoleum not be too expensive?
My other thought was to maybe use a very heavy duty pond liner to line the bottom. This way I would have something that I can put bedding down on and for either (the linoleum or the pond liner) I could just hose it out to clean it after I remove the bedding (and I figure if the rabbits keep using their litter pans they might not really need bedding other than in their nest boxes.
I was also thinking it would be nice to make it a double level thing. It’s for two 2.5 lb holland lop rabbits, so I was thinking something like 5-6 feet long, and 4-5 tall would be suitable. Maybe I could make a second level and just make sure to keep it at least 4-6” off the ground.
Anyway, our climate is very wet. It rains all through the fall and the winter and frequently throughout the spring and the summer. It doesn’t usually get into extremes of cold ( I think the coldest I have seen is about 16 F) and it doesn’t get tooo hot for very long (maybe upper 90’s for a handful of days during the summer)… except the one problem is that it is VERY humid typically when it is hot.
I was thinking of enclosing the hutch on three sides, leaving only the front open, and then installing some vents (just holes with hardware cloth over them) in the back up under the hutch roof to help provide adequate ventilation, while still keeping them dry.
Any ideas? I’m sorry this is so long, but I want to make sure I have things right before I start building.
P.S. I know rabbits are not rodents… but I figured they’re still small and furry, and have some of the same needs…
