We just adopted an 11 wk old chocolate lab puppy. The last puppy I had to train was a poodle/shih tzu mix, and I don’t remember him being NEARLY this difficult. The new puppy is messing all over the house, and she’s given many opportunities to go outside and do her business. Also, we crate her at night, and she whines and cries for at least a good hour-hour and a half! She goes #2 in her crate, and then gets it all over the cage and the floor, as well as the tray on the bottom of the crate. We’ve put a divider up so that she doesn’t have much room at all, but how do I get her to do her business outside, rather than in the crate? She made a mess last night, and after I cleaned it up and gave her YET ANOTHER bath, I put the divider back up, but this time, I gave her even less space. She has room to turn around, but that’s about it. She cried for an hour, so we switched her, and put her in the smaller crate for one of the other smaller dogs, and put her in our room. She cried for about 15 minutes, and then that was about it. She did much better the rest of the night. I’ve never trained a lab before, so this is proving to be a difficult task. I love her so much, and I want to do right by her, because I’ve heard that labs are such good family dogs, if trained properly. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I’m fourteen years old, and i just got my new puppy. I’m not the best when it comes to responsibility, but with my new puppy, I’ve been going pretty well. she is a female, boxer/Australian shepherd, and she is colored brindle. her names Kona. and i have a few questions i need help with, or else my mom is thinking of taking her back. (and i only got her last sunday)
- for the whole house training thing, its been alright. good, but not the best either. shes had her accidents, and things, but i do take her out every once and a while. but it seems that she has to pee every 15 minutes. is this normal? she is 12 weeks old by the way.
- crate training. i watched several dvds on simple ways to train my dog.
since the cage is still s little too large, i set the divider into her cage. this way there is enough space for her to hang out, and not so much room so that she can create a potty area. (thats what they said in the video) but today i came home and she had poop all in her cage, is the space too big or too small?
- mouthing. my dog is very aggresive when it comes to playtime, and she bites all the time. now i know that this will happen since she is still teething. but she even gets to aggresive, that she starts growling at me.
HELP!?!

I have a 11 week old shih tzu boy, we have had him 3 weeks now, we use a room divider for his sleeping area, we divide the kitchen in half so he has a nice space to sleep, play and go to the toilet (on training pads) when we put him in it and leave the house he cries for a minute or so but then stops (we have a camera on him that we can watch so this is now we know he doesn’t cry when we are not in the house) but on the other hand when we are in the house if he’s in his play area if he can here us he will cry and cry and wont stop, for instance on a morning when I’m getting ready for work which i HAVE to do lets face it lol. He cries the whole time, once I’m ready i go down to him, take him outside for the toilet and give him lots of cuddles and attention and give him his breakfast i do this for 15 minutes depending on how much time i have before work. Then i put him back in his pen and go to work. When is he going to stop crying and barking on a morning, we have a chocolate Labrador who is nearly 2 and she sleeps in her pen and doesn’t cry bark at all. i just hope our shih tzu will eventually stop so we can have sleep ins on weekends occasionally! Also he needs to learn to be quite in his play pen for when we are having people over for dinner etc and don’t want the dogs around begging. Please can someone help and give me some idea of how long this will last or how i can stop.
Ps. I know not to go to him when he’s crying and have tried teaching him to understand ‘quiet’ but its not working yet. But when i need to go down to feed him before work i have to go down weather he’s crying or not! I try to wait till a gap when he stops. I also don’t leave him al day, I work 7:30-3:30 but go home for 30 minutess at lunch time to play with him and feed him.

Thanks for your answers, I play with him all evening most the time or he’s at least with us in same room, plus with the other dog he plays with her lots too. I train him every day and he knows sit, lay, paw and kiss, i am currently teaching him stay and quiet, but its proving more difficult. He has lots of toys and chew things in his play pen with him and i don’t even think he cries and barks because he’s bored as i see him playing on the camera while I’m out and he never cries it’s just when I’m in the house and he can hear us, he wants to be with us. So i think it’s more separation anxiety than actually not liking been shut in the pen, because if we stand in the pen and shut him outside of it he cries to get in! So it’s purely that he wants to be where we are. Also one of you mentioned not to pad train but to crate train, but what do you mean? He goes on pads around the house there’s one in the lounge and one in his pen, but he will also go on carpet if the pad isn’t in his site.
Also shouldn’t i try and stop him crying first before toilet training him to go outside other wise i wont know weather he’s crying to go to the toilet or crying just because he’s crying. When ever he’s outside he does go on grass and i take him outside frequently and say ‘toilet’ and treat him when he has been. He just doesn’t cry yet to let me know he needs to go outside, if the pad is there he will go on it and if it isn’t he will go on carpet.
Answer to last answer, yes he can go in with other dog, they love to play but we tried them together on a night and the other dog barked as she wasn’t in ‘her’ bed and wanted to be in her bed. i do have time for my puppy and in two weeks time he will be going to doggy day camp two days a week so will only be alone tues wed and thurs and we are leaving the other dog at home with him in his pen (well this is the theory) so they can play together and i will still go home lunch time to walk them both, puppy cant walk outside yet only in garden as his last vaccination has only just been done, our other dog loves doggy day camp and gets to play with other dogs all day and comes home knackered so hopefully this will wear the puppy out too and he may start sleeping longer on a morning and not crying so much. I think I’m going a pretty good job at the moment to be honest and i cannot and should not stay at home 24 hours to tend to all his needs, he needs to learn rules and I’m the master.
